Dear noob ...
>>> Doesn't look too pretty in the screenshots.Looks pretty plain jane.
If you are looking for pretty eye candy for your computer, you have come to the wrong place.
>>> Is like other systems, say windows?
If you are looking for decent OS replacement for your Windows box, try Linux. Ubuntu is one of the most popular distros for new users ... I hear. And you should be able to get hold of a "live" distro which will allow you to run Linux off a CD / DVD without installing stuff on your hard-drive. But we are no here to offer advice on Linux distros. Google is your friend.
JNode is nowhere like as mature and feature-full as Windows or Linux. We are working on it ... but don't hold your breath waiting
>>> Will it detect my modem?
It depends. If it is an external modem connected via a serial port, JNode can in theory to connect to it. However, you wouldn't be able to use the modem to connect JNode to the internet, since (AFAIK) JNode doesn't support PPP or SLIP yet. (Frankly, most folks have a broadband connection these days, so implementing PPP or SLIP is not a priority item for the JNode developers.)
But it is one of those abominable WinModems that require a proprietary binary driver ... you've got about as much chance as a snowball in hell
